In-Person Task Force Meeting | Wastewater Surveillance for Public Health

Join the East Bay Leadership Council's Water, Energy, & Environment Task Force on Tuesday to learn about the benefits of wastewater surveillance on public health. We will hear from an infectious disease expert on why wastewater is a reliable source for detecting infectious diseases, such as Covid-19, and assessing their prevalence in a community. We will gain insight on the ways surveillance data can be used to detect early disease breakouts and create public health guidelines, among other important utilizations.

Our Speaker

Dr. Alexander Yu — Infectious Diseases Physician and Chief of the Surveillance Section in the Division of Communicable Disease Control at the California Department of Public Health

As part of California’s COVID-19 pandemic response, Dr. Yu co-led establishment of CDPH’s Wastewater Surveillance program, a collaborative effort involving multiple state agencies, the CDC, wastewater utilities, local health departments, and academic researchers. He is responsible for strategy, design, implementation, and oversight of enhanced surveillance programs for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases of public health importance.

Dr. Yu provides clinical care at San Mateo County Medical Center and holds an adjunct clinical faculty appointment at Stanford University. He completed Infectious Diseases fellowship training at Stanford University, Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and his Masters in Public Health at Harvard University.

Must Read | California lawmakers failed to fix the insurance market. So what comes next?

CalMatters — As a string of last-minute deals surfaced this week before tonight’s end of the legislative session, one highly anticipated proposal was not among them — a plan to keep insurance companies in California even as the financial risk from wildfires grows.

A key deadline passed Monday night without a bill, dooming the effort for the year, despite involvement from legislative leaders, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and Gov. Gavin Newsom. Negotiators struggled to find a balance between loosening regulations on an insurance system that has been pushed to the brink and maintaining protections for homeowners who could face much higher premiums to stabilize the industry, a politically fraught prospect.
