Save the Date | Join us for an upcoming event with Assemblymember Lori Wilson

We are excited to announce that Part 1 of our annual Capitol Series will feature an in-person event with Assemblymember Lori Wilson.

Assemblymember Wilson represents District 11 and currently serves as the chair of the Select Committee on Transportation and Emergency Preparedness. While the majority of her district is located in Solano County, we are proud to count her as part of the East Bay legislative delegation and a champion of building a thriving region.

Check back here next week for more event details and registration instructions. We look forward to seeing you there!

The East Bay Leadership Council's Water, Energy, & Environment Task Force hosted Dr. Lorien Fono, Executive Director of the Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA), and David Senn, Senior Scientist at the San Francisco Estuary Institute. They explained the collaborative efforts being made by regional water leaders to establish an evidence-based San Francisco Bay nutrient management policy in response to last summer's algal bloom and the changing climate.

Senn explained some of the factors that likely led to the algal bloom, including increased sun exposure coupled with the Bay's unusually low turbidity. He emphasized that the Bay is one of the most nutrient rich estuaries in the world, and while it is usually resistant to its nutrient-rich status, there is increased sensitivity as conditions change. Nutrients in the Bay, such as nitrate, essentially acted as fuel for the algae that grew over the summer.

Since the algal bloom, Bay Area wastewater treatment facilities have committed to reducing nutrients discharged to the San Francisco Bay, and there has been an increased emphasis on water monitoring and nutrient mapping. Dr. Fono discussed how a cooperative, strategic regional approach to nutrient reduction and restoration measures can achieve multiple benefits in terms of climate change resilience, and minimize the burden on ratepayers to fund this important work.

Build the Bench | Are you interesting in running for elected office?

Are you interested in running for local office? If so, we hope you will consider applying for the East Bay Leadership Council's candidate training program. Since 2017, our Build the Bench program has served as an important step in the winning campaigns of more than a dozen alumni.

Must Read | The Oakland A's are on the verge of moving to Las Vegas

The Oakland Athletics have signed a binding agreement to purchase land in Las Vegas to build a new ballpark, signaling a move away from Oakland after more than five decades in the city.

Team officials announced this week that they had finalized the agreement to buy a 49-acre site just west of the Las Vegas Strip and hope to play there beginning in 2027. "We realize this is a difficult day for our Oakland fans and community," the team said in a statement.

The A's hope to break ground next year on a new stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000 to 35,000, team President Dave Kaval told The Associated Press.

If the move proceeds as planned, the A's will become just the second Major League Baseball franchise to move cities in more than 50 years.
