The Talent & Education Task Force held a joint meeting with the Economic Development Task Force on December 4th to better understand K-12 and Community College career readiness programs. Numerous conversations at the Economic Development Task Force about workforce development and work-based learning prompted the Task Forces to hold a joint meeting.

Hilary Dito, Director of College and Career Readiness at the Contra Costa County Office of Education and Tara Sanders, Program Manager, Workforce and Economic Development at the Contra Costa Community College District both presented on current initiatives and ways employers could engage. Both presentations highlighted opportunities for students to learn about potential careers and gain the skills needed to enter those fields (especially those that may not require a bachelor’s degree).

Gina Del Carlo, Director of Earn and Learn, was also in attendance to answer questions about internships and how Earn and Learn is working to increase exposure and work-based learning experiences in the East Bay.

Lastly, the group discussed Prop 13, the $15 billion school construction bond measure that will be on the ballot in March. Acknowledging the need to address health and safety concerns, deferred maintenance and growth in our public-school system, the group agreed to recommend a position of support to the full EBLC Board.
