Leading Through Partnership: A Conversation with Incoming EBLC Board Chair Deneen Wohlford
Deneen Wohlford brings a collaborative approach to her tenure as Chair of the East Bay Leadership Council.
Deneen Wohlford sees partnership as the catalyst for meaningful change. Whether improving healthcare, strengthening communities, or shaping regional policy, she believes the best solutions emerge when people come together around a shared purpose. It's a philosophy that has guided her career and now shapes her leadership as the incoming Chair of the East Bay Leadership Council Board of Directors.
"I've always believed that the biggest challenges facing our communities can't be solved by one organization alone," she said. "They require leaders who are willing to come together, build trust, and work toward something larger than themselves."
Throughout her career, Deneen has built partnerships that strengthen both organizations and communities. After leading high-performing teams at top public relations agencies, she joined Kaiser Permanente, where she has served as Public Affairs Director for nearly two decades. In that role, she has led regional campaigns, cultivated community partnerships, and helped guide major system transformations. Her commitment to regional collaboration also led her to the East Bay Leadership Council, where she joined the Board of Directors in 2019 and has served on the Executive Committee since 2022. Those experiences have reinforced her belief that lasting progress is only possible when leaders work across sectors—an approach she now brings to her role as Board Chair.
From Deneen’s perspective, the East Bay’s greatest healthcare challenges—including affordability, access to care, workforce shortages, the rising demand for mental health and addiction care, and supporting an aging population—extend far beyond the healthcare industry. They are challenges that affect employers, schools, families, and the region’s long-term economic vitality.
What gives her optimism is the East Bay itself.
"We have innovative businesses, outstanding educational institutions, committed nonprofit organizations, and healthcare systems that care deeply about the communities they serve," she said. "When those sectors work together, we have an opportunity to improve not only healthcare, but the overall well-being and vitality of our region."
For Deneen, that spirit of collaboration is also what makes EBLC’s work so meaningful. She believes effective leadership is about bringing people together, listening to different perspectives, finding common ground, and creating opportunities for others to accomplish more together. As Board Chair, she hopes to build on EBLC’s role as a convener of leaders across sectors, strengthening the relationships that allow the region to tackle complex challenges and seize new opportunities.
As she begins her term as Board Chair, Deneen’s vision is centered on strengthening the connections that have long defined EBLC’s success. She hopes to deepen relationships among board members, create greater value for members, and expand opportunities for emerging leaders to engage in the organization’s work. Above all, she wants EBLC to remain the trusted place where leaders come together to solve the challenges—and seize the opportunities—that will shape the future of the East Bay.
"If there's one thing I hope people say at the end of my term," she said, "it's that EBLC became even more connected."
