EBLC to honor Safeway with East Bay Leadership Medal at the 2024 Installation Awards.
Safeway is one of the most well-recognized grocery retail brands with a long-standing reputation for quality and service, proudly serving Northern California since 1926. Today, the company operates over 290 stores across Northern California, Nevada, and Hawaii, under four banners, including Andronico’s, Safeway, Pak N’ Save, and Vons.
In 2023, the Safeway Northern California Division donated more than $40 million in food and financial support to charitable organizations in the communities it serves. $1.2 million went toward assisting people and communities affected by the Maui fires and another $5 million went toward grants to support breast cancer research and treatment along with programs for people with special needs, youth education, and veterans.
One of Safeway’s primary focuses for philanthropic giving is hunger relief. Through the Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors program, the NorCal Division enabled more than 13 million meals, including 336,000 breakfast meals for kids, and connected 422,000 people to SNAP benefits. Safeway stores raised more than $5.8M through hunger campaigns to help combat food insecurity by providing gift cards and product donations to 55 local hunger relief organizations. Some of the organizations they supported include the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano and Meals on Wheels Diablo Region, both of which are also members of the East Bay Leadership Council.
Safeway is represented at the East Bay Leadership Council by Wendy Gutshall, who serves on EBLC’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee as the Vice Chair of Communications. Safeway has been a major contributor to the success of EBLC events and serves as a vital player in supporting the economic vitality of the East Bay region.
