In August, the Housing Task Force invited Kevin Zwick, CEO of the Housing Trust of Silicon Valley (HTSV), to present on how housing trusts can impact affordable housing.

Mr. Zwick explained their role as a community development financial institution (CDFI) and nonprofit housing lender, which has allowed them to support the building of more than 18,000 affordable homes. The presentation outlined the unique challenges of the Bay Area – including that 6 of the 10 most expensive housing markets exist here – and the HTSV programs aimed at addressing them. These programs include the TECH fund, an investment tool supported by companies like Google and Linkedin, that makes loans to developers to purchase land for affordable housing.

The EBLC will continue to explore housing trusts and their potential benefits to East Bay communities.
