At the East Bay Leadership Council we believe that engaged communities are thriving communities. We also know that nonprofit organizations are essential to addressing the most pressing issues facing the East Bay.

Yet many nonprofits struggle to recruit the board members they need to move their mission and our communities forward.

That’s why we founded Engage East Bay in 2022 alongside the Contra Costa Economic Partnership with the goal of matching local leaders ready to make a difference with nonprofits seeking new board members.

We are also proud to partner with the East Contra Costa Community Alliance (ECCCA) since 2026 to promote this opportunity to strengthen nonprofit capacity and sustainability while supporting greater community engagement across the East Bay.

To help make these connections, we have developed two surveys — one designed for nonprofits to share what they are looking for in new board leaders and another for individuals to share their interests and professional skills.

FAQs

  • Once you complete the appropriate survey, you will receive a confirmation email with next steps including a list of nonprofits seeking board members or a list of local leaders hoping to join a board of directors.

  • Yes! Participating in the program is free for nonprofits and individuals.

  • No. You will have the opportunity to engage organizations and local leaders on a rolling basis.

  • Individuals should be able to complete the survey in less than 5 minutes. Nonprofits will need to set aside around 10 minutes.

  • All skills are needed in prospective board members. it’s just about finding the right place for you to engage.

  • Time requirements vary depending on organization. We ask both individuals and nonprofits about the time commitments to ensure a good match.

  • Upon completion of the survey, you will immediately receive a list of nonprofits and individuals interested in connecting. Either party can then initiate contact and explore board service.

  • Once you complete the “Individual Survey”, you will receive access to a full roster of nonprofits seeking board members.

  • No problem. All experiences levels are welcome and valued.

  • Some nonprofits prefer candidates that live locally, but not all. And remote meetings may allow you to participate fully from a distance!
